It's hard to believe we have already had five weeks of school! The kids are working hard and showing improvement in many areas. This week we are finishing the one-minute addition time tests and moving on to subtraction. Quick recall of subtraction facts is an area almost everyone needs to work on. We will still be doing the addition five-minute tests for the next couple of weeks. We have completed our unit on place value and will conclude the addition unit on Tuesday. For the next three weeks we will be working on regrouping in subtraction. Knowing the subtraction facts will help your child immensely as we work on this skill.
Many of the children continue to do Reading Counts quizzes on their lexile books. The number of quizzes a child takes during the nine weeks will affect his/her Reading grade. By now, I would hope the students have taken and passed at least three to four of them. These quizzes really show the student's understanding and comprehension of a particular book.
We have finished all of the NWEA tests for the fall. These will be taken again in the spring along with ISTEP.
I will call some of you soon if you have volunteered to help in the classroom. I also would appreciate it if any of you find some good "bargains" on healthy snacks that we can have in the classroom. The kids love having a snack as a reward for a job well done or just to celebrate Friday! Cereals, pretzels, Chex mix, goldfish crackers are some of the snacks that are easy to pass out. Also, Dixie cups or other small cups are great to use for the snacks.
I am really enjoying my class this year! It is a great group of third graders! Thanks for all of your support and help at home.

A Long Weekend!

I can't believe we have already completed three weeks of school. The weeks have been good ones for me, and I hope for your child. We have ten students who have passed through the 9's on the one minute quizzes. Fourteen have completed the five-minute addition test with 90% or better. Our goal is to have all 25 achieve 90% or better in the next couple of weeks.

Many children have been taking the Reading Counts quizzes. Ask your child how many he/she has completed. The goal is one a week.

Friday, September 11th, we will have a convocation at 9:30 in the gym. We are also doing the Dog Jog during our special classes. My class will be walking/jogging laps from 11:05-11:45. The time is different because the convocation is during our special class time. You are welcome to come walk or watch!

Also, I am planning on introducing cursive this year. I may not spend as much time as in the past, but the children will learn how to form the letters correctly and write words. If you think your child needs more practice, I have materials to send home if you wish.

Have a wonderful, long weekend!
